    Job Title: Industrial Designer & Creative Manager

    Department: Engineering/R&D

    Reports To: Sr VP of Engineering with dotted line to category design leads

    Status: Full Time/Exempt

    Location: San Diego

    Salary: Negotiable

     

    SUMMARY

    Manage and direct the development of design concepts for hockey, golf, baseball and lacrosse products, focusing on function, style, usability, user experience, and production cost. Work directly with internal and external customers, to understand product requirements and develop cosmetic, graphic and aesthetic features that attract customers resulting in increased sales and brand recognition. Create product features and visuals that are new, novel and unique to TRUE Sports.

    SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Continuously provide a stream of ideas and new product design concepts and present to category leaders on a regular basis.

    Effectively utilize industry contacts and customer relationships to identify new concepts, processes and technologies. Research materials and applications technologies to advance product performance and/or reduce cost.

    Collaborate with sales and marketing teams on cosmetics, visual features and styling. Produce renderings, prototypes, samples, physical models and renderings as needed.

    Use computer software and equipment to develop virtual models, images and design renderings. Prepare sketches of ideas, detailed drawings, illustrations, artwork, and/or blueprints. Work with CAD design engineer for 3D modeling where needed.

    Participate in product development and brainstorm meetings with design engineering, marketing, sales, production and sourcing.  Develop and provide iterative designs and alternatives. Modify and refine designs, using working models, to conform with customer specifications, production limitations, or changes in design trends.

    Prepare final drawings, renderings specifications and tec-packs necessary for production and out-sourcing. Support vendor management relative to industrial design issues when appropriate. Support the definition and communication of specifications and requirements relating to visuals and cosmetics.

    Conduct appropriate research, visit cutting edge factories, attend trade shows, and study competing products and design styles and motifs to obtain perspective and generate design concepts. Participate in new product planning or market research, including studying the potential need for new products.

    Provide guidance, oversight and direction relating to capabilities, equipment and personnel needed for full in-house creative capabilities. The goal is to create world class capabilities for the company and provide many of the services that are currently being procured through agencies and outside contractors.

    QUALIFICATIONS 

    Self-managed, motivated, inquisitive and entrepreneurial nature. Confident in sharing ideas, working through issues and taking initiative.

    Strong aesthetic and artistic sensibility and ability to visually and verbally communicate ideas through sketches, renderings, and presentations. You must be able to produce images of concepts to share with the team and present to our customers.

    Good eye for and taste in form, color, texture and material. Ability to build physical models as required to communicate visual and functional concepts. Ability to identify trends and opportunities in the marketplace through resources and contacts developed over time.

    Ability to use CAD, CAM, 3D printing and other related software as a tool to transform two-dimensional designs into physical models.

    Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills and ability to work successfully with all levels throughout the organization

    Organizational skills and ability to clearly define, prioritize and track the tasks and objectives of multiple projects.

    Willing and able to travel as needed including China.

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

    Undergraduate degree in industrial design, graphic design, studio art, architecture, or engineering

    Skilled in the use of all appropriate computer tools and software.

    Minimum of 5 years’ experience in industrial design. Experience in sporting goods preferred.
